Sandea (halosulfuron) is an herbicide registered for pre- and postemergence application in pumpkins and numerous other crops. Sandea has efficacy on a number of broadleaf weeds including pigweed, ragweed, velvetleaf, mustards, nutsedge, lanbsquarters (preemergent), morning glory/field bindweed (suppression).
Can you use preen around pumpkins?
We grow a pumpkin, gourd and cucumber patch – about 1.5 – 2 acres. As this has grown over the last couple of years, weed control is becoming a requirement. We use Preen on our tomato and pepper garden and it works great.
Can Clethodim be used on pumpkins?
The herbicide DCPA can be applied once the pumpkin plants have at least four or five leaves to control grasses and some broadleaf weeds. Clethodim can be used to control shorter grasses, such as bluegrass.
Will atrazine kill pumpkins?
Atrazine would rule out pumpkins for at least 2 years, depending on how much you use and how much rain you get to leach it out. It doesn’t break down well in soil and ends up in the water table.
Can you use Prowl on pumpkins?
At this stage, it appears that V-10142 is not safe for use on pumpkins as a directed postemergence herbicide. Neither are Sandea alone or in combination with Prowl, nor Spartan at the high rate of 0.38 lb ai.
Where should you not use Preen?
Preen Garden Weed Preventer should not be used in any areas near ponds, lakes, waterways or even storm sewers. As noted on the package label, this product is extremely harmful to aquatic life, including fish, shrimp and oysters.

In fact, Roundup has been shown to be so deadly to bees that in one study it killed 94% of bees exposed to Roundup. In comparison, the trifluralin in some Preen products is not as deadly as Roundup. However, that doesn’t make all Preen products safe for use around bees.
What happens if I use too much Preen?
Using too much of the product is just as wasteful and may be harmful to plants and the environment. That means you should identify what the problem is before applying a product. If you have bugs on a plant and apply a fungicide, you will still have bugs.
When should I apply Preen?
Preen should not be used on flower seeds. It can be used after flowering plants have germinated and are 2-3 inches tall. Preen may also be incorporated into the soil when seeding vegetables or applied after mulching beds. By applying Preen as early as possible, you can eliminate the need for hand-weeding.
