So well known that it’s been incorporated into everyday speech, rare as hen’s teeth, the saying goes. But facts have a way of shifting in science. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin have found a mutant strain of chicken that does appear to have teeth.
Is there a bird with teeth?
Birds aren’t the only animals with beaks, but they’re the only major group of animals in which a beak is the exclusive option. No modern birds have teeth.
Can birds grow teeth?
The researchers recently created more Talpids by tweaking the genes of normal chickens to grow teeth. “What we discovered were teeth similar to those of crocodiles—not surprising as birds are the closest living relatives of the reptile,” said Mark Ferguson of the University of Manchester.
Why do chickens have teeth?
